Inspiring a love of reading is the primary focus at St Columba’s Primary School Wilston this Book Week (17 to 23 August).

Not only are St Columba’s Primary School students and their educators dressing up as their favourite book characters for their school's annual Book Week parade, but they are also eagerly anticipating their school’s library extension.

The works are expected to be a real page turner and will include, library expansion, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) Lab, and once complete will also feature flexible furniture.

Book Week, run by the not-for-profit organisation Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA), is an opportunity to engage students and the community with a love of literature.

St Columba’s Primary School Principal Andrew Oberthur said with the building work to begin early Term 4, this Book Week is an exciting new chapter for the school.

"The new modern design will offer an incredible boost in space and resources, that will enrich our students’ learning experience,” he said.

"This library upgrade will also provide students with the tools and environment they need to excel in STEM subjects and prepare them for future careers in these vital fields.

“Our hope is that once the library is complete, it will become a central hub for learning, discovery, and innovation, where our students can find a wealth of resources that nurture both their love of reading and their curiosity in STEM.”

Students have been helping fundraise for their school’s library redevelopment via the Brisbane Broncos Cash for Cans initiative.
