Across 13 years of schooling at Assisi Catholic College Upper Coomera, I have learned many lessons. From reading and writing to the trying complexities of mathematics and science and yet, only one lesson has truly resonated with the way I live my life.
‘Regret is worse than failure.’
In short, it’s the idea that no matter how embarrassed you appear or disappointed you feel, there is nothing worse than the endless torrent of possibilities that could’ve, would’ve, or should’ve occurred if you dared to try.
For me, being Vice-Captain at Assisi in 2024 was not a one-way road to instant success but rather a long, demanding path of trials and tribulations.
However, I was extremely fortunate to be able to participate in opportunities, supported by my teachers, who challenged me to push the boundaries of my comfort zone and gave me the skills and perseverance to continue giving my best.
Speaking in front of hundreds of people seemed like my nightmare, and yet, I was able to do so on multiple occasions before commencing my official leadership role.
Whether it was at the Queensland University of Technology Future You Summit or running for Junior Mayor within the Gold Coast Junior Council, I was able to hone my skills in both leadership and communication.
I was able to test my response to situations outside of my comfort zone with the support of my teachers and the Assisi community.
Although some of these opportunities did not result in my ideal outcome, I ultimately met some of the most amazing people. I have gained priceless skills and experiences that I would not have gained elsewhere.
Assisi has further taught me to fully immerse myself in any opportunities that arrive both academically and personally, whether it was dressing up as a nutcracker for the Franciscan Christmas Carols to dancing my heart out with the Preps at the disco.
These opportunities may be viewed as either embarrassing or insignificant, but to me, it made every second worth it.
Nothing beats witnessing the smiles and laughs of little kids who believe that high fives are the best gift in the world or whose faces light up in awe as I escort the Easter Bunny around school.
I never had to ponder what if I tried, as Assisi empowered me to try my best in everything I do, for which I am forever grateful.
