BCE students take out Equestrian Queensland EQ Interschool competition

26/04/2022
It’s a rainy morning and most would still be in bed at 4am, but 13 Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) students from Emmaus College, Jimboomba are already up feeding their horses, saddling up, and getting ready to jump for their dreams.

The students’ aspirations became a reality in Term 1 when the BCE school was announced as the Equestrian Queensland EQ Interschool Queensland’s School of the Year 2021.

The award recognises a school that has set itself apart from other schools through its high standard of organisation, governance, community engagement and its resounding successes and achievements at regional, State and National levels.

Emmaus College Assistant Principal Religious Education and Equestrian Coach Maria Gould said her students took out the competition.

“Our students were competing against some of the state’s best Equestrian teams including, Sommerville House, Stuartholme School, and Tamborine Mountain College,” she said.

“For our team of only 13 riders from years 4 to 12 to win this award is a remarkable achievement.

“Equestrian is not an easy sport, and our students showed such professionalism on the competition day.

“It’s a full-time job for our students when, throughout the competition season, they are riding 4 to 5 times a week, before and after school.

“Our students know their horses come first and even if it’s raining, they make sure their horses are fed, warm, and dry.

Emmaus College School Principal Kevin Schwede said the sportsmanship exemplified by the student's during competition is like no other.

“We’d like to send a special congratulations to our students, who exemplified both talent, skill, good sportsmanship, and professionalism throughout the competition,” he said.

“A shout out to the equestrian program support staff and parent groups too.

“We cannot do this without the support we have from our parents in the team and staff, including our Leadership Team and Sports Department.

“Together we can all take pride in this major achievement.”

Emmaus College have been running their Equestrian Program since 2007.
