As the world marked International Women’s Day (8 March), a new chapter is being written in Brisbane’s education landscape. Bianca Murphy has taken on the role of Principal at Holy Spirit School, New Farm stepping into her first substantive Principalship.
Taking charge of one of Brisbane’s most popular inner-city schools comes with its own unique lessons, but Bianca is more than ready to lead by example.
A graduate of Brisbane Catholic Education’s (BCE) Women in Leadership program, she has had the opportunity to draw inspiration from BCE’s top educators, including BCE’s Executive Director Dr Sally Towns and BCE’s Formation and Engagement Executive Sharon O’Keeffe.
Q: International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate female leadership. How did participating in BCE’s Women in Leadership program impact you personally and professionally?
A: Taking part in BCE’s Women in Leadership program was a defining moment in my career.
A standout moment was hearing from Dr Sally Towns and Sharon O’Keeffe, who shared their inspiring journeys as school leaders.
Their insights and experiences gave me the confidence to take the leap into Principalship.
The mentorship, networking, and exposure to diverse leadership perspectives also encouraged me to reflect deeply on my own aspirations and strengths as an educator.
Most importantly, it reinforced the idea that leadership is about service—about creating opportunities for students and staff to grow, thrive, and feel supported.
I am incredibly grateful to BCE for championing this initiative and for fostering a culture that values and uplifts female leaders.
Q: Why is BCE’s commitment to female leadership important to you?
A: BCE’s commitment to female leadership is particularly significant because it ensures that women in education are supported, encouraged, and empowered to step into leadership roles.
Programs like this provide mentorship, networking, and invaluable insights that prepare aspiring leaders to make meaningful contributions to their school communities.
Q: What motivated you to step into leadership within Catholic Education?
A: My passion for education has always been driven by a desire to empower and inspire students to celebrate their unique gifts and talents.
Leadership within Catholic Education offers the opportunity to foster an inclusive and faith-filled learning environment where students can grow academically, personally, and spiritually.
Stepping into the role of Principal at Holy Spirit School has been a blessing.
The ability to work alongside dedicated educators, nurture a community where all can flourish, and witness the growth and successes of students makes leadership incredibly fulfilling.
Q: What excites you most about your role as Principal?
A: Making a difference.
As Principal, I have the privilege of embracing the culture and rich Mercy tradition of Holy Spirit School, while fostering collaboration and a shared vision for excellence.
Leadership is about creating opportunities for students and staff to thrive, ensuring that learning is both transformative and empowering.
I am passionate about building strong relationships with students, supporting teachers in their professional growth, and creating a culture where everyone feels valued and inspired to reach their full potential.
Q: How do you like to connect with your students?
A: Being present.
I prioritise spending time in classrooms, on the playground, and at school events, where I can genuinely engage with my students.
My goal is for every child to feel seen, supported, and celebrated.
I want them to know they have an advocate in their educational journey—someone who believes in their potential and is committed to their success.
Each day, I make a conscious effort to be the first and last face my students see at school.
These moments of connection reinforce trust, belonging, and the importance of each student’s individual journey.
Q: How do you plan to strengthen your school community in 2025?
A: Building a strong, collaborative, and faith-filled school culture is a priority.
My focus in 2025 is to celebrate the strengths of Holy Spirit School while continuing to foster a learning environment that reflects the values of Catholic Education.
I am committed to deepening partnerships with parents, as they are the first educators of their children, and working closely with our Parish to model the Mercy values of compassion, service, and inclusivity.
By listening to the voices of students, families, and staff, we can shape a shared vision that ensures our school remains a place where everyone belongs and thrives.
Q: What legacy do you hope to leave?
A: I hope to be remembered as a leader who inspires and empowers.
A Principal who creates a culture where students and staff feel celebrated, valued, and motivated to achieve their best.
To me, effective leadership is about fostering a sense of belonging and instilling a love for learning.
I want to create an environment where students are confident in their abilities and staff feel supported in their growth.
Above all, I want to be known as a leader who leads with authenticity, integrity, and a commitment to making a lasting impact.
