Staff and students at St Sebastian’s Catholic Primary School Yeronga are excited to welcome the local community to the school during Brisbane Catholic Education’s (BCE) Open Week from 8 April to 4 May 2025.

Connected community

St Sebastian’s Yeronga Principal Angela Moore said she is thrilled to showcase the vibrant learning environment at St Sebastian’s.

“One of the special things about St Sebastian’s is how our dedicated staff and engaged parent community work together to create a nurturing educational experience," Angela said.

"Our parents and caregivers are always welcome in the school, whether it’s joining us in the staff room for a cup of tea after each assembly or taking turns to host the weekly Friday sausage sizzle."

"We are always looking for ways for families to feel connected with the school and involved in their child’s learning.”

Focus on the whole child

St Sebastian’s Primary Learning Leader Kathleen Jenkins said the school prioritises student wellbeing, recognising that learning cannot happen without a strong foundation of wellbeing.

“We are so fortunate as teachers to be given the time to consider the whole child and work with everyone involved in their care,” St Sebastian’s Primary Learning Leader Kathleen Jenkins said.

“Our open community of parents means that teachers can easily reach out if they have any concerns and ensure parents are involved in their child’s learning."

What you can explore during Open Week

St Sebastian’s approach to teaching is evidence-informed, ensuring that every classroom activity is backed by scientific research.

"All our teaching practices are evidence-informed, and this approach has led to a real uplift in our students’ performance and joy in teaching for our staff,” Angela said.

During Open Week, the school will host a community coffee morning and parent information session focused on teaching reading.

"Reading is a lifelong skill, and how we teach reading has changed and evolved since many of our parents were at school,” Angela said.

“We want our parents and interested community members to understand how we teach reading in the classroom, based on the latest research around structured literacy.”
