MORE than 100 enthusiastic Maths students descended on St Elizabeth’s School, Tarragindi, for the annual interschool Mathematical Minds competition.
Teams from St Thomas’ School, Camp Hill; St Joachim’s School, Holland Park; St Agnes School, Mount Gravatt; Mary Immaculate School, Annerley; St Pius X School, Salisbury; St Brendan’s School, Moorooka; St James School, Coorparoo; and St Elizabeth’s vied for the titles of Junior and Senior champions.
St Elizabeth’s Principal Peter Griffin said the annual competition was attracting greater interest each year with more teams taking part.
Mr Griffin said the competition was a genuine opportunity to build community spirit amongst Catholic primary schools across the local area.
“An event such as this is representative of the culture of excellence that we strive to achieve in our Learning Enhancement Program and from all students in our school,” he said.
Mr Griffin said it was a pleasure to welcome more than 100 students to the school.
“Bringing people together is a wonderful way to nurture and build relationships,” he said.
“The buzz was electric.
“There was certainly no way of curbing the excitement and enthusiasm of students as they launched into the challenges.”
He said teachers from the schools involved also enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect.
Sally Thompson, St Joachim’s School Support Teacher: Inclusive Education, said her students “absolutely loved being a part of the day”.
“As did I.
“It was a brilliant morning,” she said.
St Pius X School Support Teacher: Inclusive Education, Michelle Dixon, said her students really enjoyed being able to challenge themselves and put their maths knowledge and skills up against Maths students from other schools.
Meanwhile Nicole Buckley, Support Teacher: Inclusive Education at St Thomas’ School, said it was a wonderful way to celebrate all things Maths related.
“The kids and I had a fantastic, challenging day of Maths,” she said.
“They loved it!”
Awards for first place in the Junior and Senior divisions were presented at the culmination of the competition with teams from St Elizabeth’s and St Joachim’s announced as winners.
“We’ve been preparing for this event for 12 months,” remarked one of the winning senior team members from St Joachim’s.
