In the lead up to Catholic Education Week 2025, we're shining a light on some of our inspiring nominees in the Spirit of Catholic Education Awards.
Two very well-deserved nominees from Saint Mary's Catholic College Kingaroy go above and beyond every day to support their students and colleagues.
Creating a safe space for students to thrive
Assistant Principal Secondary at Saint Mary's Catholic College Kingaroy, Alexandra Cashin wears many hats, including managing all aspects of the secondary school, from teaching and learning, to pathways, to learning support and even the netball team, ensuring students at the school don't miss out on valuable opportunities.
“I want to see my students thrive, regardless of their backgrounds," Alex said.
“Creating a safe environment both inside and out of the classroom, and having high expectations of our students, allows them the space to reach their full potential."
The school has seen a considerable improvement in NAPLAN as a direct result of implementing Alex's targeted improvements in literacy and numeracy.
“I am fortunate to be part of a leadership team that is dedicated to our collective goal of moving the College forward towards excellence, working with each other's strengths to ensure diverse teaching and learning is occurring across the College," Alex said.
Connecting with our studentsClassroom School Officer at Saint Mary's Catholic College Kingaroy, Matt Emery, was recognised for his commitment to faith-filled learning and community engagement.
Working in the secondary school, Matt is by far the most requested school officer by teachers to work in their classrooms, due to his ability to connect with young people.
“It is a privilege to explore the world with students and contribute to a community where they can become their best selves," Matt said.
Matt's approachable, humorous and empathetic nature fosters a positive and inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels like they belong.
“The most important thing to me is cultural competence," Matt said.
“Everyone is different, and I try and live by the philosophy 'You can't be you wrong'.
“I meet everyone where they are, only then can we navigate life as a team and make choices to improve the world for ourselves and those around us," he said.
Living the Benedictine Tradition
Saint Mary's College Kingaroy Principal, Carmel O'Brien said the school was very proud of the two nominees.
“Both Alex and Matt embody the Benedictine Tradition of our school charism by being present, patient, and open to seeing God in every interaction," Carmel said.
“Our school is richer for their commitment to fostering a community of compassion and understanding."
