The Woody Point Writers are excited about publishing their first book

SOUTHERN Cross Catholic College, Scarborough, Woody Point campus students can add published author to their list of achievements following the launch of their first book of short stories and poetry.

Written for kids, by kids, Woodys Wild and Whimsical Tales follows the adventures of the Woody Point Writers as they take a journey from the ice caps of the north pole to a mysterious mountain in a whirlpool and an assortment of memorable places in between.

Twenty-six students from Years 4 to 6 volunteered to work on the Write a Book project after Primary Learning Leader Jennie Lane recognised the need to provide students with an authentic purpose for their creative writing.

Mrs Lane said she had been looking for opportunities to challenge and extend the Woody Point students and, following an introduction to a local publisher, the rest was history.

“We were provided the opportunity to tap into a gap in the market where there aren’t many books written by kids for kids,” she said.

The book project took five months to complete, from the first production meeting through to launch.

It was officially launched to an audience of excited students, parents, and staff with a party and a book signing.

The young authors also visited classrooms to read their stories and poems to the excited students.

Mrs Lane said she was in awe of the students’ amazing abilities.

“The talent, perseverance, and bravery of these students is to be commended," she said.

“It’s been such a rewarding experience working alongside these young authors.

"The variety of creative writing has surprised me the most – “I’ve laughed at their humour, marvelled at the depth of characters and plot and am in awe of their amazing abilities."

The success of the project meant the next edition of Woody’s Wild and Whimsical Tales was planned for 2021 with younger students inspired to let their creative juices flow.
