This Socktober Brisbane Catholic Education and its 146 schools are kicking goals for good through the world game of soccer.

Socktober is a school-based community engagement initiative ran throughout October by Catholic Mission, and is rolled out across the dioceses in Australia, including Brisbane, Cairns, and Sydney.

Through the head, heart, and hands model, BCE students are encouraged to get their heads, hearts, and hands in the game as they seek sponsorship from friends and family for every goal they kick for charity.

This year funds raised will benefit children in Ethiopia, said BCE Executive Director Dr Sally Towns.

“Through the world game of soccer, students experience the reality of other children in developing countries, learn their stories, and take action to support them,” Dr Towns said.

“Our mission is to teach, challenge and transform our students, and teaching and demonstrating service, support and leadership is a perfect example of this.

“Socktober also touches on other educational areas such as history, geography, physical education, and humanities.

“I strongly encourage all BCE schools to participate in Socktober, providing the opportunity to students to lead in mission, encouraging them to not only think about what they will do to help but also why they will do it.”

Youth and Schools Engagement Officer with Catholic Mission in Brisbane, Sue Williams, said Catholic Mission is delighted to have such wonderful support from Dr Towns and BCE this Socktober.

“Thank you to the schools who have registered, and we look forward to welcoming many more to join the mission journey,” she said.

The program includes Mission Packs which are aligned to the Religion Curriculum, which are packed with activities and resources, and a popular penalty shootout activity held on your school’s mission day. To find out more, click here.
