STEM MAD SHOWCASE winners announced!

Contaminated water could be a thing of the past, with Siena Primary School, Sippy Downs who won the STEM MAD Showcase 2022 primary category for their water borne disease detector Crypto Scanner, which allows for cheap and easy detection of the dangerous cryptosporidium. ​

The STEM MAD Showcase hosted 80 teams of students across 35 Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) schools who went head-to-head today (Wednesday 20 July) at this year’s showcase. 
 
The following STEM MAD Showcase 2022 winners were announced across six different categories: 
  • Primary STEM: Siena Primary School, Sippy Downs for their invention Crypto Scanner. 
  • Secondary STEM: St Peter Claver College, Riverview for their invention H.E.L.P.S. 
  • Future is STEM Award: All Saints Parish Primary School, Albany Creek for their invention Air Borne Ambulance. 
  • People's Choice Award: St Kevin's School, Benowa for their invention Colour Our World & Trinity College, Beenleigh for their invention Smart Home Technology. ​
  • National STEM MAD Committee Award: St Mary’s College, Maryborough for their invention A.I.D Assistance in Disasters.  
  • Executive Director's Award: All Saints Parish Primary School, Albany Creek for their invention Flood Pole. 
BCE Deputy Executive Director Dr Doug Ashleigh said it’s inspiring to see some of our youngest minds coming up with such innovative solutions for some of Australia’s largest issues. 
 
“The STEM MAD Showcase is a flagship STEM event which is unique to BCE schools,” Dr Ashleigh said. 
 
“No other education sector has this kind of competition. 
 
“I’m so proud of all of the students who took part in today’s unique STEM event, your creativity and innovation was outstanding and it’s exciting seeing BCE students use their skills to forge themselves future STEM careers. 
 
“Hundreds of hours of hard work have gone into these entries, and I would like to send a big congratulations to not only our winners but also all 80 of our teams who worked tirelessly on their working models and digital prototypes of their inventions.  
 
Your innovations have the potential to make real world impact, and I know that if the future is in the hands of BCE students, then our future is looking very bright.” 
 
The winners of today’s STEM MAD Showcase 2022 will go on to compete at the STEM MAD National competition in Melbourne in September.
