Meet some of BCE’s excellent educators ahead of QLD World Teachers' Day

Ahead of Queensland World Teachers’ Day (27 October) we hear from four outstanding educators who recently received recognition at the 2023 Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) Excellence Awards 2023. 

All have gone above and beyond in their roles as educators. One built a thriving school community from the ground up, and another created a YouTube channel to teach both the fun and gory parts of history.  

These BCE educators are passionate, innovative, and dedicated to making learning unforgettable for their students.  


Kelly Chase – Winner of The NGS Super Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (Secondary)  


With a passion for history and a love for sharing stories about brave women from the past, Kelly Chase is an innovative educator.  


The Curriculum Middle Leader (Social Sciences) and Middle and Senior Years teacher from Assisi Catholic College Upper Coomera recently launched a YouTube channel and Podcast.


Aligning with the Australian Curriculum, the platforms are called ‘History Detective,’ specifically designed to provide valuable resources for busy teachers striving to deliver engaging history lessons. 


The successful sites recently won Kelly The NGC Super Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching in a Secondary School at the BCE Excellence Awards 2023.

Jody Nelson – Winner of The ACU Award for Excellence as an Early Career Teacher (Primary) 


St Matthew’s Primary School Cornubia Teacher Jody Nelson is transforming the lives of her students and in particular, one student named Kayley who has muscular dystrophy.  


In her classroom, Jody values safe inclusive learning environments that actively improve educational outcomes for all students and has adopted a communication app to support Kayleigh that her whole class can use. The app is called TD Snap, a software product that helps people with communication disabilities develop literacy skills using symbol communication. 


Jody’s ability to create inclusive classrooms awarded her The ACU Award for Excellence as an Early Career Teacher (Primary) at the recent BCE Excellence Awards 2023.

Breanna Allan – Winner of The ACU Award for Excellence as an Early Career Teacher (Secondary) 


Only two years into her teaching career, Mary MacKillop College Nundah Health and Physical Education (HPE) Teacher Breanna Allan is already making waves within the education sector. 


Breanna has used her passion for physical activity to improve the HPE department policies and practices – and in the process is reframing student mindsets around physical activity. Her can-do attitude and ability to empower and inspire a love of physical activity among students recently won her The ACU Award for Excellence as an Early Career Teacher (Secondary) at the BCE Excellence Awards 2023.

Stephan le Roux – Winner of The Archbishop’s Award for Leadership 


Now six years into his Principalship career, Holy Spirit College Fitzgibbon Foundation Principal Stephan le Roux has quickly made a name for himself as a leader among BCE staff. 


Stephan is credited for building an excellent team of educators and support staff at Holy Spirit College, and in a few short years has also launched the reputation of the school among the Fitzgibbon community. 


Creating leadership opportunities for his students from the get-go, Stephan is known for actively preparing his students for their futures. 


Stephan was awarded The Archbishop’s Award for Leadership at the recent BCE Excellence Awards for establishing a Catholic culture and charism in the wider community and building relationships with key local stakeholders.

About the BCE Excellence Awards: 

 

The 2023 BCE Excellence Awards were held on 23 August at a gala dinner to celebrate the achievements of staff.  


This year BCE received 290 nominations from across the organisation including 80 schools and office.
