It was history in the making on Wednesday May 31, when more than 220 students from the Sunshine Coast region took to the field at Brisbane Catholic Education’s (BCE) inaugural Primary School Rugby 7’s carnival.

The Sunshine Coast is the newest region to be added to the series of tournaments now in five locations across the Archdiocese of Brisbane, which will see more than 1100 BCE students playing rugby across four divisions – Girls & Boys Under 10 and Girls & BoysUnder12.

Taking part in the first ever Sunshine Coast tournament was Stella Maris School Maroochydore, Unity College Caloundra, St Peter’s Catholic Primary School Caboolture, St Thomas More Primary School Sunshine Beach, Our Lady of the Rosary Caloundra, Siena Catholic Primary School Sippy Downs, and Good Samaritan Catholic College Bli Bli.

With games traditionally held exclusively in Brisbane North, Brisbane South, and Brisbane West,BCE School Operations and Programs Lead Greg Casey said thesporting experienceis unique to BCEand has grown in popularity since it first began in2019.

"Last year, we introduced the Gold Coast to the tournament, and this year, we are thrilled to have launched our first-ever Sunshine Coast carnival," he said.

“The excitement was palpable on the day with our students displaying extraordinary talent and passion on the field.

“A lot of the success of the carnivals can be attributed to the Queensland Rugby Union’s (QRU) support across the days, with the QRU providing coaching, referees, and first aid.

“The days are really about our students getting out there and having some fun with their school friends, building team and field skills, as well as emotional wellbeing.

“BCE is proud to provide a platform for students to showcase their skills and share their love for Rugby 7’s.

“We remain committed to nurturing the next generation of Rugby 7’s players and promoting the importance of physical activity and sportspersonship.

"I would like to thank QRU for their ongoing support of the BCE Primary School Rugby 7’s carnivals.”

QRU have qualified referees and First Aid staff on hand to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the students at the carnivals.
