Our Lady’s College Annerley is buzzing with pride as Year 12 student Atong Koot clinches the prestigious Vocational Student of the Year title at the recent Queensland Training Awards.
The Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) student received the award for outstanding achievement across multiple vocational pathways including Certificate II in Sport and Recreation, Certificate III in Business, Certificate II in Hair and Salon Assistance, and Certificate III in Disability and Support Work.
With this monumental achievement, Atong now has sights set on an even bigger stage—the National Finals, which will see her travel to Canberra this December to compete against other students from across the country.
Atong said she spent six of her early years in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya and arrived in Australia on humanitarian visits.
“I am grateful for each and every day to be in Australia,” she said.
“Australia has given me so many opportunities to follow my dreams, and I want
to give back to this country.
“I am incredibly honoured to be named Queensland Vocational Student of the Year.
“This achievement is a testament to the hard work and support of my family and the community around me.
“They inspire me to pursue my dreams and make a positive impact in the lives of others.
“I want to make my mother proud and become a nurse.”
Our Lady’s College Principal Andree Rice said since joining the College as a Year 10 student in 2022, Atong has achieved remarkable success.
“Atong finds great happiness in helping people, and I know she will not only reach but exceed her dreams,” she said.
“Her strength of character, perseverance, growth mindset, and dedication to her family and community make her an exceptional young person.
“She is a most worthy recipient of this award, and we are incredibly proud of her
Achievements and wish her all the best at Nationals.”
