As thousands of students across Queensland prepare for NAPLAN (12 to 24 March), Mary MacKillop College, Nundah students are more than prepared and ready.

2024 performance and growth

According to the 2024 NAPLAN results the College’s Year 7 and Year 9 students have demonstrated success in the National Assessment Program, with many students meeting or exceeding outcomes in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and numeracy.

The data also indicates an improvement in the 2024 Year 9 student results, compared to their 2022 test results.

Mary MacKillop College Principal Erin Wedge said, “50 per cent of Year 9 students have shown impressive growth in reading from Year 7 to Year 9”.

"Writing results tell an even stronger story, with 60 percent of Year 9 students achieving academic growth in this area,” she said.

Driving factors

“The growth can be attributed to several key initiatives at our College,” said Ms Wedge.

“The Transition, Integration, and Core Teachers program at Mary MacKillop ensures a smooth start to high school.

“Holiday workshops like Remarkable Writers, sports clinics, and readers programs help students build confidence and readiness.

“We believe the program fosters deep learning and a sense of belonging, supporting academic success in NAPLAN.

Ms Wedge said that by having two Highly Accomplished and Lead (HALT) Teachers and one Highly Accomplished (HAT) Teacher at Mary MacKillop College Nundah, it was also a unique advantage.

“Their leadership and mentorship enhance overall teaching quality at the College, while their ability to provide targeted support helps close learning gaps and boost student confidence, leading to improved student outcomes,” she said.

"We also run a program for our Year 8 students (Year 9 students in 2025) to boost NAPLAN readiness and overall assessment capability.

“Weekly lessons incorporate questions that support students within the NAPLAN assessment context, with personalised teacher feedback provided to students.

“We are looking forward to further improvement in our students results attributing to the BCE system-wide approach, with the guidance and support of our NAPLAN Plan.

"Our NAPLAN Plan focuses on enhancing literacy and numeracy through targeted strategies, ensuring that every student receives the support they need to excel in these key areas and achieve academic success.

“We are incredibly proud of our students and their self-direction and focus in readiness of NAPLAN.

“Their growth reflects the hard work and dedication of our entire community working together, cheering the girls on.

“We are committed to continuing this tradition of excellence and supporting our students in reaching their full potential.”

The future is bright

“We wish our Year 7 and 9 students the very best as they take on this year’s NAPLAN test,” said Ms Wedge.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to showcase their learning and growth.”
