The community of Star of the Sea Catholic School Torquay today captured national attention with a visit from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

As one of many Brisbane Catholic Education schools who were deeply impacted by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, Star of the Sea suffered significant damage when 300mm of rain hit in 24 hours.

The Prime Minister witnessed firsthand the recovery efforts underway, thanking students, staff, and families as they continue to rebuild and recover, while also taking the time to engage with students and answer any questions they had.

Star of the Sea Catholic School remained closed until Friday 14 March – a total of six days.

Principal Nathan Wilson said, “the visit from the Prime Minister reaffirmed the community’s resilience and lifted spirits, providing much-needed encouragement as students, staff, and families continue rebuilding.”

Nathan adds the support from his staff and the community had been overwhelming, with particular help from the South Australian Country Fire Service and Fraser Coast Regional Council.

“We are beyond grateful for the assistance provided by South Australia CFS in moving heavy furniture,” he said.

“Through their hard work and commitment, we managed to decommission our contaminated classrooms and move most year levels to their new learning spaces.

“I would also like to thank the Fraser Coast Regional Council for their invaluable assistance provided during our external clean-up.

“This has been an emotional and exhausting period for our school staff.

“We are truly blessed to have a dedicated team of staff who consistently roll up their sleeves, show up, and work hard, no matter the circumstances.

“I cannot thank our staff enough for all they have done in ensuring we can provide a safe learning environment for the return of our students.

“I would also like to thank all our families for your patience and understanding during this period.

“Together we can overcome any challenge.”
